In short

Summary

TMJ / TMJD treatment at Blossom Wellness Clinic in Orangeville, Ontario. The TMJ is the temporomandibular joint — the hinge in front of your ear that opens and closes your jaw. TMD (or TMJD) refers to the disorders that affect that joint and the muscles around it. Two professions here treat it, and they are booked and billed separately.

The treatment

What is TMJ, and what is TMD?

TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joint itself. TMD, sometimes written TMJD, is the umbrella term for disorders affecting that joint, the chewing muscles or both — which is why people often say they “have TMJ” when they mean they have symptoms coming from it.

Care here starts with assessment: what you are experiencing, how the jaw moves, and what is contributing. Treatment may include work on the muscles around the jaw and neck, and intra-oral techniques where appropriate and agreed. Intra-oral work is always optional and explained before it begins.

Our booking page states that both routes are available: massage therapy with Kamalpreet Kandhola, and physiotherapy with Navjot Kaur, who offers TMJ/TMJD treatment including intraoral and extraoral techniques.

  • Two provider routes, billed differently
  • Intra-oral work optional and consented
  • Assessment before treatment
Choosing

Which route fits what you are looking for?

Jaw care at Blossom is provided through more than one profession. They are booked, billed and claimed separately, and none is a lesser version of another — which one suits you depends on what you want from the appointment.

Still deciding? Send us a question and describe it in a sentence — we would rather point you to the right appointment than have you book the wrong one.

Reasons people book

Why people book TMJ care

03

Clenching & Grinding

Daytime clenching or overnight grinding, often noticed as a tired jaw on waking.

04

Related Head & Face Symptoms

Some people also notice headache, ear or facial symptoms alongside jaw problems. These have several possible causes, so they are assessed rather than assumed to come from the jaw.

Your appointment

The TMJ treatment process

  1. Assessment

Your history, how the jaw moves, and what makes symptoms better or worse.

  2. Explanation & consent

What is proposed is explained first, including whether intra-oral work is suggested and why.

  3. Treatment

Work on the jaw, face and neck muscles, with intra-oral techniques where agreed.

  4. Plan

What to do between appointments, and a realistic view of spacing rather than a fixed course.

Assessment

Your history, how the jaw moves, and what makes symptoms better or worse.

First 24 hours
Mild tenderness is common. Soft foods and warmth over the jaw can help.
Tell your dentist
If you are under a dentist’s care for the same problem, it is worth telling them you are having this treatment.
Suitability

Is TMJ treatment right for you?

Assessment comes first, and it is also what tells you if another route — your dentist, physician or a different service here — would serve you better.

Often a good fit if

  • Jaw pain, tightness or fatigue
  • Clicking, catching or restricted opening
  • A clenching or grinding habit
  • Jaw symptoms your dentist has raised with you
  • You want it assessed rather than treated blind

Speak to us — or your physician — first if

  • Your jaw has locked and will not open or close
  • You have had a recent injury to the jaw or face
  • You have an active dental or oral infection
  • You have new, severe or rapidly changing facial pain
  • You have numbness, weakness or difficulty swallowing

Questions

TMJ / TMJD Treatment questions

Do you offer direct billing?
No. The clinic does not provide direct billing. We provide receipts you can submit to your extended-health provider yourself.
Should I see the massage therapist or the physiotherapist?
Both routes are listed on our booking page and they are billed differently — one as massage therapy, one as physiotherapy, which matters if you are claiming through a plan that covers one and not the other.
Can I decline intra-oral work?
Yes. It is optional, explained before it begins, and only goes ahead with your agreement. You can also ask to stop partway through. Say so at your assessment and your practitioner will plan around it.
How is this different from Signature Blossom Buccals?
TMJ care is assessment-led treatment for a jaw problem. Signature Blossom Buccals is a dedicated intra-oral and facial massage session with set inclusions. If you want your jaw assessed, start here.
My dentist gave me advice or a night guard — should I bring that?
Yes, please do. Bring anything your dentist has said, and mention any appliance you have been given. It is useful at assessment and we would rather work alongside your dentist than around them.
How many appointments will I need?
That depends on what assessment finds and how you respond. Your practitioner will give you a realistic view after the first appointment. We do not sell fixed courses.
Is it covered by my benefits?
That depends which route you book and what your plan covers. Massage therapy and physiotherapy are usually separate categories on an extended-health plan, and some plans cover one and not the other. We do not direct bill; we provide receipts you submit yourself.
How do I book an appointment?
You can book online any time through our Jane booking system, or send us a message with the inquiry form on the homepage. The Book buttons on this page open TMJ treatment in Jane directly.
